Chiropractic History, Research and Safety
The Chiropractic profession dates back to 1895; however, some of the earliest healers in history have been known to utilize the spine in order to provide full body healing.
The "founding father" of Chiropractic Care has long been recognized as D.D. Palmer. Palmer coined the simple, yet innovative, theory behind chiropractic: that good health can be sustained naturally, without the use of drugs or surgery, by removing vertebral subluxations and allowing the nervous system to function properly. In fact, Palmer even developed the term chiropractic from two Greek words, "chiro," meaning hand, and "practic," meaning operation or practice. In 1898, Palmer named his clinic the Palmer School and Infirmary of Chiropractic and began to accept his first students.
Today, many would be surprised by Palmer's treatments because, although he used no drugs, he successfully treated a wide variety of ailments, including fevers, infections and body aches and pains. Following in Palmer's footsteps, Dr. Faccone received his doctorate degree at the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic.
The chiropractic profession has grown rapidly to become the third largest field of healthcare behind medicine and dentistry. Healthcare practitioners in all these fields rely upon data made available as a result of clinical research. As the chiropractic profession continues to grow, so does the need to conduct continuous and on-going research. There are entire organizations devoted to chiropractic research and advancement including the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research and the Consortial Center of Chiropractic Research. To continue the growth of the their profession, the SSC doctors are required to take continuing education courses each year to keep their license active in the State of North Carolina.
