Therapeutic Modalities

Therapeutic modalities are treatment methods used to combat a variety of injuries in an effort to decrease pain, reduce inflammation and swelling, and diminish muscle spasms. Therapeutic modalities provided by the trained and expert staff at Southern States Chiropractic (SSC) offer a soothing environment for the healing process associated with rehabilitation injuries.

SSC offers six methods of therapeutic modalities:

Cryotherapy (Cold)
This is the application of ice or other forms of cold compress that treat athletic injuries. Cryotherapy results in the cooling of the tissues and reduces pain, swelling, and muscle spasms. The various methods of Cryotherapy can include ice massages, cold water immersions, and a cold whirlpool bath. Cryotherapy helps to decrease inflammation and pain.

Thermotherapy (Heat)
This is the application of heat as a treatment for athletic injuries. Thermotherapy results in the heating of underlying tissues, such as muscles and tendons, and provides a relaxing and soothing effect. Thermotherapy involves various strategies, including ultrasounds, warm whirlpools, and contrast baths. Heat therapy increases blood flow and allows the healing process to occur by introducing new nutrients to the damaged area.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS)
This is the elicitation of muscle contraction through electric impulses. These impulses are delivered through electrodes on the skin, which are placed in exact proximity to the muscles that need to be stimulated. This helps relax a muscle that is constantly contracted or in spasm. It also helps re-train and strengthen muscles.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound therapy has been used over the last 50 years to treat soft tissue injuries. Ultrasonic waves are produced by the mechanical vibration of the metal treatment head of the ultrasound machine. This assists in breaking up fibrous/scar tissue that have built up within the muscle or joint.

Intersegmental Traction Therapy (IST)
This type of therapy distracts joints to facilitate proper alignment. It does this by admitting fluid to fill the joint, thereby allowing joint nutrients to heal damaged cartilage.

Trigger Point Therapy
This type of therapy allows the chiropractors at SSC to associate pain in one location with trigger points elsewhere in the body. After all, you can't always assume that the problem in your body is at the exact place where you feel pain.

Additionally, therapeutic modalities are a fantastic rehabilitative treatment method for greater exercise and strengthening the muscles after pain or an injury. The services provided by SSC provide for shorter healing time and improved overall health. And while SSC doesn't have a massage therapist on staff, our doctors are trained at and treat patients through therapeutic massage, another excellent treatment method for generating better health and alleviating pain.

The doctors at SSC are leaders in the therapeutic modalities field and are well versed in all available treatment options. Dr.'s O'Hare, Faccone and Beer are committed to taking away your pain and helping you experience complete healing.
